People-Pleasing, Guilt, and Boundaries: A Book Worth Reading

One of the most common things I hear as a therapist is, “I know I need to say no, but I feel guilty when I do.” If that sounds familiar, Set Boundaries, Find Peace by Nedra Glover Tawwab is a book worth picking up. It’s one of my favorite recommendations for people who feel stretched thin by family demands, work stress, or the pressure to keep everyone else happy.

What I appreciate most about this book is how approachable it is. Tawwab takes a topic that can feel uncomfortable and makes it practical, clear, and doable. She reminds readers that boundaries are not about shutting people out—they are about protecting your well-being, being honest about your needs, and creating healthier relationships.

A big reason this book resonates with so many people is its focus on guilt. Setting boundaries can feel uncomfortable at first, especially if you are used to putting other people first. But Tawwab does a great job of showing that discomfort does not mean you are doing something wrong. In many cases, it is simply part of learning a healthier way to relate to others—and to yourself.

The book also offers real-life examples and language you can actually use, which is one reason clients often find it so helpful. It connects boundaries with self-worth in a way that feels compassionate and empowering. The message is simple but important: your needs matter, and taking care of yourself is not selfish.

Overall, this is a warm, practical read that I often recommend to people struggling with people-pleasing, burnout, resentment, anxiety, or relationship stress. If you have a hard time saying no, feel responsible for other people’s emotions, or want healthier relationships, this book offers a helpful place to start.
