Considering Payment Options for Therapy
Therapy is an investment in your emotional health, personal growth, and overall well-being. When deciding how to pay for services, it’s important to understand the differences between using insurance and choosing a self-pay option. Many clients find that self-pay offers greater flexibility, privacy, and control over their care.
Below are a few key considerations to help you make an informed decision.
Why Some Clients Choose Self-Pay
Greater Privacy & Confidentiality
When insurance is used, companies require a mental health diagnosis to be submitted and stored as part of your permanent medical record. Self-pay clients are not required to receive or report a diagnosis, allowing for a higher level of privacy and discretion.
More Control Over Your Treatment
Insurance companies require therapy to be deemed “medically necessary” and may request detailed clinical information to determine coverage. They can also deny or discontinue coverage at any time. With self-pay, your therapy is guided by your goals—not insurance criteria.
No Session Limits or Authorization Delays
Many insurance plans limit the number of sessions allowed (often 6–12 per year) and require ongoing authorizations and paperwork. Self-pay allows you and your therapist to determine the frequency and length of treatment that best supports your needs.
Fewer Financial Surprises
Insurance benefit quotes are estimates—not guarantees of payment. Claims may be partially paid or denied after services are rendered, resulting in unexpected out-of-pocket costs. Self-pay offers clear, predictable fees from the start.
Continuity of Care
Insurance networks change frequently. If your provider becomes out-of-network, you may be faced with unexpected costs or the need to transition to a new therapist. Self-pay ensures continuity and consistency in your therapeutic relationship.
Making the Choice That’s Right for You
